We have the travel bug and want to explore the world, create stories, share moments and go out laughing with a world full of wisdom and hearts full of joy. Currently sitting in our Toyota Campervan travelling around Australia, we had been working hard between trips, furiously saving, crunching long hours making our aspirations possible. We both have an extensive background in photography, which fuels our passion but also our careers that keep us rolling... EXPLORING IN MAURICE One of the great advantages of living on the road is the sense of freedom it creates; you can go anywhere, any time. We have everything we need in our van, aptly named Maurice due to his ‘mustache’. W hen we free camp, this means the fridge and the microwave aren’t up and running, but we don’t need those. We’ve become accustomed to living with the basics, despite our need to charge up our camera gear. We have a second battery in the van, with a converter so we can use a normal plugged device. The second battery gives us around an hour’s worth of power at a time before the converter starts bleeping. That’s enough to get some charge in our laptops to edit our photographs and the camera batteries can charge by a cigarette lighter. If you don’t have a second battery and want to charge your gear, why not opt for a solar panel? Great for the environment and there’s some decent ones on the market right now! Of course there is always generators but you might annoy the neighbours at free camping areas. We bought our van nearly two years ago, less than a week into arriving in Australia from travelling around Asia. When we landed, we stayed in a hostel for a few nights to find our feet, but we needed something more ‘us’, more freedom and less confinement to an area. We wanted to do our farm work required for our second year here as we arrived CAMPERVAN CRUISING Article & Images by Amanda & Kraig Hughes on a working holiday visa and decided it to be the best thing to do straight off the plane. This meant we required transport and somewhere to live ... Maurice was the perfect solution. Within eight days of touchdown in Adelaide we were in Renmark picking oranges, and continued harvesting all variations of things; apricots, almonds, pumpkins and even a little onion weeding. Now, not all farms pay well so it was important for us to save every penny. Thus began our love for free camping! We have stayed at various places, and it’s easy to find some well- known ones on WikiCamps (w w w. wikicamps.com.au). You can always find more by speaking to others on free camps or doing some research online. We treat the places we stay as our home, we don’t litter, and we don’t damage the environment. As true explorers say, leave only footprints; take only pictures. The ideal camping spots for us are rest stops that allow 14 | GO CAMPING, FISHING & 4WD ADVENTURES 14-16 Campervan Cruising.indd 14 4/10/2016 4:18 pm
