The teenager has reached that age. How was school? “Okay”. What did you do today? “Not much”. What do you want to do in the holidays? “Nuffin”. If conversation is difficult, agreeing on a holiday destination is a nightmare. He even knocked back a trip to New Zealand because it wasn’t ski season! Imagine our surprise when he announced that he wanted to climb Kosciuszko during the Christmas holidays. A few days in Kosciuszko National Park was something we could all agree on and we had a short window of opportunity between Christmas and New Year. The other half was particularly enthusiastic, “Mark and Wendy did it with their kids last year. They camped at Thredbo Diggings. Free camp, right near Thredbo. Perfect”. Could it really be that easy? Well, Thredbo Diggings was chock-a - block, as was the Ngarigo camp just down the road. The prospect of camping cheek by jowl just didn’t appeal so we pushed on. About 25 kilometres past Thredbo, we came to Tom Groggin Station – what a contrast. Here, it was busy along the riverbank but there were wide open spaces on the flat behind with shady groups of trees providing perfect camp sites. Camp established we sat back to enjoy the late afternoon light and soak in our surroundings. Golden grass framed Article & Images by Alan Fowkes nearby mountains and supported a mass of grazing Eastern Greys. On the grass, a preening doe indulged her hungry joey while the dominant buck chewed contentedly nearby – threats were obviously few. Just above grass level it was a different story. An avian armada waged war on the wing, moths and beetles falling in their hundreds. As night fell the feeding frenzy dimmed till, eventually, the only sound was the murmur of the mighty Murray as it fulfilled its Federated purpose – maintaining the border between the Cockroaches and the Mexicans.
