you buy a few basic supplies, and the only one selling unleaded fuel. The Manning Gorge campground is located 7km from the roadhouse (fees payable at the roadhouse). Large shaded campground, untreated water, toilets and solar showers. Adjacent to the campground is the Lower Manning Gorge swimming area. You cross here to walk to Manning Gorge. The walk trails are relatively easy though does have some rock clambering (4km return) – allow 1.5 hours each way. You are rewarded with a swim in the large pool at the waterfall. GALVANS GORGE – A short drive from Mt Barnett this is an easy walk (2.4km return) to the small shaded pool. Swimming, but no camping. ADCOCK GORGE – Also no camping. BELL GORGE AND SILENT GROVE CAMPSITE – The turn- off to Bell Gorge and the Silent Grove campsite is near Imintji Roadhouse (diesel only). Bell Gorge and nearby Lennard Gorge are located in the 392,100 hectare King Leopold Range Conservation Park. The Department of Parks and Wildlife (DEPAW) campground at Silent Grove is very popular and has showers and flushing toilets. The first part of the walk into Bell Gorge is fairly easy (1km to the top of the waterfall), however the last section involves crossing the creek and scrambling down a steep rock wall to the water. LENNARD GORGE – The walk trail to the lookout over the falls is not difficult but the challenging climb down to the pool is only recommended for the physically fit. WINDJANA GORGE – 145km from Derby is probably the GRR’s most well- known and easily accessible gorge. The Windjana Gorge National Park preserves a section of a 350 -million-year-old coral Devonian Reef where the Lennard River cuts through the Napier Range. The DEPAW campground is perfectly located only 500 metres from the Gorge entrance with views of the sheer western cliff face of the gorge. Some shade, flushing toilets, solar showers, bore water, a separate generator use camp, day use area and public telephone. The dramatic entrance to Windjana Gorge is via a narrow cavern. Windjana is the prime freshwater crocodile viewing area of the Kimberley, so there is no swimming here. If you enter the gorge just before sunset you can view the amazing spectacle of millions of fruit- bats flying out from the gorge for their evening feeding. Bring a torch for the walk back to camp. South of Windjana you can visit the ruins of Lillimulura police outpost and TUNNEL CREEK and learn about the Jandammara and the Bunuba Aboriginal people. The 750 metre long tunnel is completely dark except at its entrances and halfway point. As you must wade through water bring a torch or headlight and wear boots or shoes for wading. Watch out for the resident bat and crocodile population! MORNINGTON – There are other stations and gorges to visit further off the GRR, including Mornington and Charnley River Wilderness Camps which are both part of the Australian Wildlife Conservancy. From Windjana it is not far to the bitumen and the end of the Gibb River Road. The Kimberley is one of the last true wilderness areas on Earth. of Derby in the west to 53km west of Kununurra in the east, in Western Australia’s Kimberley. WHERE TO CAMP Station stays and national park camps. WHEN TO GO Dry season – the road is usually open May to October. Please check road conditions and campground availability at other times. FURTHER INFORMATION n High clearance 4WD and heav y duty off-road camper trailers recommended. n Be prepared. Carr y water, ex tra fuel, food, at least two spare tyres and basic mechanical spares. n Have your vehicle ser viced before you leave home and make sure it is mechanically sound and tyres are in good condition. n Slow down, drop tyre pressure and drive for the road conditions. Drive with your headlights on to improve visibility. n There are only two roadhouses – Mt Barnett (diesel and petrol) and Imintji (diesel only). n Most of the land along the GRR is private property. Please look out for straying stock, camp only in designated areas, don’t light fires and carry out all rubbish with you. n Do not disturb Aboriginal sites or touch rock art. n Some stations can offer basic tyre and mechanical repairs.
