Clockwise from far left: Paul hooked up to a raging Kingfish. These fish try hard to bust you off on anything they can find like mooring ropes, jetty poles, rocks and reef | Vital to catch the livebait before any successful Kingfish outing a multitude of different size squid jigs are a must lure to put in the boat | A teaser towed behind the boat of plastic squid and birds can increase your chances of raising a Kingfish to your bait enough, but generally it’s worth putting in the effort. On the way out to our regular squid grounds we noticed that a recent big swell had pushed a pile of kelp up against one particular headland. We pulled in to toss the squid jigs about and to our welcome surprise we got six squid in as many casts. Now our spirits were high and we headed back up river in the hope of converting these awesome live baits into Kingfish. I like to fish live squid for Kings on very heavy gear due to the amount of structure we have to battle these powerful fish around. Wharves, jetties, rocky shorelines and worst of all vacant moorings all make life chasing river Kings difficult – 50lb braid with a 60lb leader is standard tackle for these brutal fighters. Attached to the leader are twin Gamakatsu 5/0–6/0 hooks. These hooks are strong, sharp and powerful and need to be to extract a solid Kingfish from around the structure.
